Blueprints for Improbable Architecture

Artist Statement

My recent paintings and installations examine the psychological implications of institutional architecture, emptied of its use. In these works, layers of physical materials and light act as veils that reveal depicted space through intimate observation.

The paper cutout screens and the reflective surface in the paintings blur the margins between the interior architecture of a gallery space and the perceived illusion.

The purpose of this work is to transform an existing utilitarian environment through the use of fantastical linear forms to disorient the space so that the viewer can reexamine and re-experience the familiar.

These newly invented spaces are meant to challenge our conventional perceptions of structures and their boundaries.

The viewer can navigate these strange environments in infinite ways and at the same time not quite know how to behave.
